You can wear them on their own. The fleece lining sits against your skin and feels soft, so most people skip the extra layer entirely.
Do the zippered pockets go all the way through to the lining?
No. The pockets are sewn into the shell and close with a zipper, so small items stay put while you walk or bend.
Will the fleece lining flatten out after a few washes?
Not if you wash cold and hang dry. Hot water and high heat are what mat down brushed fleece, so keep both low and the pile stays soft.
